Harnessing the energy of the earth - Geothermal heating and cooling

More solar energy hits the earth and is stored in the ground you walk on every day than we could even consider discussing..

How does it work ?
Nearly 47 % of the suns energy that reaches the earth is absorbed by the ground. This allows the earth to maintain warmer ground temperatures in the winter and cooler ground temperatures in the summer. (about 52.2 degrees on cape cod). Through the process of refrigeration - " The process in which work is done to move heat from one location to another" Wikipedia .- geothermal heat pumps remove stored heat in the ground and relocate it to your home. In the summer, the same heat pumps remove unwanted heat from your home and place it in the ground. One way of looking at it is that we borrow heat for the winter and give it back in the summer.

Geothermal heating and cooling is among the most cost effective and lowest greenhouse gas emmisive methods of heating and cooling available.
The geothermal heat pumps' efficiency is measured in a Coefficient of performance
( COP ) which rates the heat pump based upon how much electricity it uses in proportion to how much energy is delivered to your home.
Most geothermal heat pumps are operating in the range of 4.5 to 7 COP. Basically that means 450 to 700 percent efficiency. By purchasing one kilowatt of electricity, you get 4.5 to 7 times that energy in return.

Geothermal contractors are not common though. In order for your project to work as planned, you must have a contractor trained in the relationship between the earth coupling ( wells or loop fields), the heat loss evaluation of your home and the installation of each type of system.
We always perform a complete testing of your home via a BPI home energy audit, a Manual J heat loss calculation based upon audit results, and Manual D duct sizing based upon Man J. After a test well is done, we will select the optimum earth coupling and install the best system for your project.
